What Jamie Carragher once claimed he was hearing about Liverpool's owners and Jurgen Klopp before he took the job at Anfield
However, that wasn't always set to be the case.
Indeed, Xabi Alonso was in line for the Liverpool job in the summer before Slot came into the fray, while Liverpool also looked at Ruben Amorim.
Way back in 2016, Klopp came to Liverpool after Brendan Rodgers was sacked, but this wasn't always a move that was inevitable.
Indeed, speaking on Sky Sports at the time, Jamie Carragher actually claimed that he was hearing that Liverpool weren't keen on Klopp after Rodgers' departure.
Carragher claimed on Sky Sports that Liverpool weren't actually keen on Klopp at one point.
Indeed, the pundit always has his finger on the pulse around Anfield, and the word on the street before Klopp was hired was that Liverpool weren't keen.
However, just four days later, Klopp would become the manager of Liverpool.
"Where do they go next Jamie? Klopp is favourite and Ancelotti is, inevitably, second-favourite. What would you like to see them do?" Carragher was asked.
"I think either of those coming to Liverpool, supporters would be ecstatic. Carlo Ancelotti is a Champions League winner, three times. You know what Klopp did at Borussia Dortmund.
"If it was me, I would go for Klopp over Ancelotti, he's got more to prove. Ancelotti is a great manager of course, but he's gone to clubs where you'd expect to win trophies."
"I'm hearing that the owners are not fully set on Jurgen Klopp, that's what you hear on the streets of Liverpool, speaking to different people, journalists maybe. There are talks of people on the Liverpool committee not being sure about Jurgen Klopp.
The word was that Liverpool weren't keen on Klopp, but in the nine years that followed, the German proved why he was the only man for the job.
In his very first press conference, Klopp vowed to turn doubters into believers, and he did just that.
His record at Liverpool speaks for itself, he won all there is to win with the Reds, and, in another world, he'd have won two more Premier League titles and two more Champions League titles too.
Jurgen Klopp’s record at Liverpool | |
---|---|
Games | 389 |
Wins | 304 |

Klopp rebuilt Liverpool after what was a desolate era in the early 2010s, and while Carragher said at the time that Carlo Ancelotti would've been an acceptable appointment, Klopp was the right man at the right time for Liverpool.
Doubters to believers was Klopp's rallying cry when he arrived at Liverpool, and, based on what Carragher said, there were even some doubters in the boardroom, but by the time Klopp left, everyone associated with Liverpool knew that they had just witnessed nine years' worth of a genius at work.
