Westinghouse Advances US Nuclear Expansion Plans Following Trump Directives

Nuclear equipment supplier Westinghouse is actively pursuing an expansion of its nuclear operations within the United States, a move spurred by recent executive orders issued by President Donald Trump. The company is reportedly in discussions with U.S. officials and industry partners regarding the deployment of ten large nuclear reactors, according to a report by the Financial Times citing Westinghouse's CEO.

The initiative from Westinghouse directly responds to President Trump's executive orders, which were officially published on May 23, 2025. These orders mandate a significant reduction in regulatory hurdles and aim to fast-track the licensing process for new reactors and power plants. The overarching goal is to condense the traditionally multi-year approval timeline to a mere 18 months. The presence of figures such as Maria Korsnick, President and CEO of the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI), during the signing of these executive orders by President Trump, underscored the engagement of the nuclear industry with these new governmental directives.

Dan Sumner, Westinghouse's interim chief executive, expressed confidence in the company's capacity to support the president's agenda. Sumner told the Financial Times that Westinghouse is "uniquely positioned" to deliver on these objectives. He pointed to several key advantages: the company possesses an approved reactor design, specifically its AP1000 model; it has a viable and established supply chain; and it has recent, practical experience from successfully building two AP1000 reactors in Georgia.

Furthermore, Sumner highlighted that Westinghouse is actively engaging with the current administration. These discussions include "key points of interface with the loan programmes office," underscoring the critical role that financing will play in the deployment of these new nuclear reactors. The company believes that this proactive engagement, combined with its technical capabilities and regulatory preparedness, will be crucial for realizing the planned expansion.
