, had its premiere as an official selection at this year’s Cannes Film Festival last Sunday. Anderson attended the festival alongside a handful of the film’s star-studded troupe. Anderson traveled to the festival’s Lumière Theatre by bus, with him were actors Benicio Del Toro, Mia Threapleton, Michael Cera, and Riz Ahmed. In the moments leading up to the film’s screening, Jeffrey Wright, Benedict Cumberbatch, Bill Murray, Rupert Friend, co-scribe Roman Coppola, and composer Alexandre Desplat accompanied Anderson on the red carpet.

The film was met with a warm reception and earned a six-minute standing ovation from the premiere audience, a number smaller than observed in previous years but in line with the shorter ovation lengths at this year’s festival. Star Mia Threapleton was seen in tears, hugging Michael Cera as the crowd applauded. Anderson then took a moment to express gratitude towards his cast.

The Phoenician Scheme serves as the filmmaker’s fourth Cannes debut. The first being Moonrise Kingdom (2012), followed by The French Dispatch (2021), and Asteroid City (2023). The film follows Benicio Del Toro as a European entrepreneur who, along with his daughter (Threapleton), becomes a target of tycoons, terrorists, and assassins. Rounding out the cast are Anderson alumni Jeffrey Wright, Scarlett Johansson, Bryan Cranston, and Tom Hanks.

The Phoenician Scheme will release with a limited engagement starting May 30th, followed by a nationwide release on June 6th.
