We Are Obsessed With the Plant Protein Options on This Nutritious Meal Platform

Published 11 hours ago5 minute read

Regularly cooking with high-quality, fresh ingredients is one of the best (and tastiest ways) to keep our bodies nourished and feeling good. But the reality is that this isn’t always possible 100 percent of the time for all of us. After all, there are times when life can be busy, difficult, and overwhelming.

But if you enjoy eating a nutritious, well-balanced meal at the end of a stressful day—and you don’t always have the energy to cook—then a regular meal delivery service may be a worthy investment.

13 Vegan Meal Delivery Kits Ranked From Price to Taste

There are many plant-based meal kit subscriptions to choose from, but one of the most popular wellness-focused, organic meal delivery services in the US has to be Sakara Life.

Founded more than a decade ago, Sakara has increased in popularity over the years, and now the plant-based meal and supplement brand—which counts on nutritionist and doctor input to formulate its meals—was worth around $150 million in 2021, according to Forbes. If you want to check it out for yourself, here’s what you need to know.

Sakara Life works by offering two nutrition programs to choose from. There’s the weekly Signature Nutrition Program, which enables customers to choose meals anywhere from three to five days per week (all of which are free of meat, dairy, gluten, refined sugar, GMOs, pesticides, and harmful chemicals).

Alternatively, the Level II: Detox program is available monthly and is designed to offer a “deeper reset” to help reveal any potential food sensitivities. The meals in this program are free of grains, nightshades, nuts, soy, all sugars, and all of the ingredients eliminated in the Signature Nutrition Program as well.

Sakara Life’s meal programs are built around its signature “pillars of nutrition,” which emphasize plant protein, hydrating ingredients, healthy fats, and eating the rainbow.

“[Our pillars] revolve around eating organic, wholesome meals free of chemicals and processed foods, something the American diet has become far too reliant on,” co-founders Whitney Tingle and Danielle DuBoise wrote in Time back in 2017.

Eight years later, the brand still earns praise from nutrition professionals.

“There was a lot to love nutritionally about these meals,” Caitlin Beale, MS, RDN, recently wrote for Everyday Health. “The variety of plant-based ingredients translates to more fiber—and that made my dietitian’s heart very happy.”

She applauded Sakara’s foundational approach but noted that more transparency around nutritional breakdowns would be helpful, especially regarding protein content, which may fall short for some people. Still, Sakara offers a number of protein snacks for those looking for an extra boost of the essential nutrient (more on this below).

Overall, Beale summed up the experience positively: “The food was well-made, tasty, and could support health by promoting eating more plants, increasing fiber for microbiome health, and limiting refined processed foods. Mixing Sakara meals with food from home would be ideal to ensure a balance of nutrients.”

To be transparent, Sakara is not a cheap meal subscription option. Right now, its Signature Nutrition Program starts at $140 a week.

If you’re not interested in committing to a program just yet, you can choose to just order one of the brand’s supplements or snacks. Read on to learn more.

With each nutrition program, a range of pre-prepared, plant-based meals is offered, all of which are crafted by chefs and designed to be energy-boosting, organic, and nutritiously balanced. The menu regularly changes from week to week, but you can expect options like Cacao Chip and Almond Waffles, Lavender Quesadilla, Crunchy Kale Salad, and Five-Spice Dan Dan Noodles.

If you don’t want to commit to one of Sakara’s meal programs, but you love the sound of its granola dishes, don’t worry, you don’t have to miss out. Another option is to simply buy just granola straight from the brand! There are currently two options to choose from: the Classic Superfood Granola with gluten-free oats, goji berries, almonds, and coconut, or the Plant Protein Granola, which features milk thistle, mulberries, flax, and matcha.

Sakara’s super bars are the ultimate snack, as they’re designed to support energy and satiation (which means they’ll help you feel fuller for longer). Check out its best-selling Metabolism Protein Super Bar, which is made with just three key ingredients: Brown seaweed, pomegranate seed oil, and plant protein.

As well as granola and bars, Sakara also offers an extensive supplement range, which you can order as a one-off purchase or on a subscription basis if you prefer. Options include Metabolism Super Powder, which, according to the brand, has been formulated for metabolism support. It contains DygloFit, Chromium, and cinnamon bark extract and is designed to be whipped up in smoothies or shakes or stirred into coffees or teas, depending on your preference. Other supplement options include the Sakara Protein + Greens Super Powder, the Daily Exlixir (a liquid multivitamin), Fiber Super Powder, Metabolism Bite (a vegan gummy), and the Complete Probiotic Formula.
