Kottayam/Kannur: Thousands were shifted to relief camps from low-lying areas of Kerala as water entered their houses with monsoon remaining strong in the state. On Saturday alone, water level rose by 10cm in Kuttanad and crossed danger level in several parts of the region.Kuttanad has turned into a pool of misery. People have started depending on water transport as the roads have submerged under water.The functioning of taluk hospital in Kuttanad, especially in-patient treatment, was affected as water entered its wards. Relief camps were opened in almost all parts of Kuttanad.In Upper Kuttanad, several houses were submerged. Apart from rain, there was also an inflow of water from the eastern regions. Pampa, Manimala and Achankovil rivers breached banks.
Several houses in Muttar panchayat went underwater. Power supply was disrupted in many places. People could be seen shifted to the first floor of their houses as water entered the ground floor.Flooding looms large over neighbouring Kozhikode and Kannur districts as well where heavy downpour has been causing widespread destruction.Wooden country boats and fibre boats were seen tied in front of many houses in Payyannur in Kannur.More relief camps were opened in southern districts also as per the figures released by authorities.Aa many as 46 relief camps have so far been opened in Kottayam district and 1,136 persons are currently staying in them, according to district authorities.Several places in Alappuzha got isolated following heavy rain and flow of water from hill districts, with Kuttanad suffering the most. Alappuzha-Thiruvalla road got inundated at many places and KSRTC temporarily stopped its services. More than 200 relief camps have been opened in Alappuzha district. A total of 851 persons are accommodated in 26 relief camps in the district, according to a statement issued by the district authorities.More than 100 houses reportedly suffered damage in Idukki district. Water level increased in Mullaperiyar dam. Ponmudi, Kallarkutty and Malankara dams' shutters were raised.Both the hilly and coastal regions of Ernakulam district received heavy rain while in Thrissur, the shutters of Vazhani dam were raised.Rain threw normal life into disarray in Kollam district too and more than 150 families were shifted to relief camps. A parked school bus was damaged after a tree fell on it. District administration said the loss in agriculture sector alone would be around Rs 50 lakh. In-patient treatment was affected due to this in the hospital. Meanwhile, relief camps and gruel centres have opened in almost all parts of Kuttanad. Though there was respite from rain on Saturday afternoon, the water level kept on rising.
The padasekharams, which were being prepared for paddy farming, were filled with water.

The situation was no different in Thalavady panchayat.Camps have begun in almost every panchayat in upper Kuttanad. Several families are coming in search of camps. All roads, including major and minor roads in Kuttanad, are underwater. Water has entered Nedumparam, Thakazhy, and Kelambaglam junction on the Ambalappuzha-Thiruvalla state highway. Though KSRTC buses continue service along the route, the movement of small vehicles has been affected.
