Watch Self Esteem's soulful cover of Fontaines D.C.'s 'Starburster'
Self Esteem has performed a soulful cover of Fontaines D.C.‘s ‘Starburster’ – watch the new rendition below.
The Rotherham singer unveiled her cover for BBC Radio 1’s New Music Show, where she was accompanied by a full choir.
Beginning with the choir cooing in the background, Self Esteem (real name Rebecca Lucy Taylor) delivered the sing-rapped verse in a quiet, steady tone.
More instruments were introduced as the song slowly progressed, with Taylor’s voice slowly getting louder and louder. The stirring cover culminated in a final breakdown as the drums came in by the last chorus.
Speaking about the cover, Taylor said: “I’m a big Fontaines D.C. fan, and I just love this song. I thought that it would be interesting to try make a Self Esteem version of it.”
Taylor recently dropped her new album ‘A Complicated Woman‘ on April 25 via Polydor Records.

To celebrate the release, Taylor performed a one-woman show of the album at Duke Of York’s Theatre. Created by Taylor and Tony award-winning designer Tom Scutt, the “unique” performance is described as “an ambitious quasi-theatrical experience that harnesses the power and energy of a gig but presents it through a theatrical format”.
The show was hailed by Madonna, who watched Self Esteem perform and called her an “incredible artist”.
Self Esteem will be touring her album from September this year, including three nights at London’s O2 Academy Brixton and a huge hometown show at Sheffield’s Utilita Arena. Nab any remaining tickets here and see all dates below:
