Watch: Jose Mourinho appears to grab Galatasaray coach's nose after losing Istanbul derby
Galatasaray have accused Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho of "physically attacking" their head coach Okan Buruk after an intense Turkish Cup derby, claiming he grabbed Buruk’s nose in a post-match altercation.
The incident took place at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium following Galatasaray’s 2-1 victory in the Turkish Cup. As both managers gathered near the match officials at the final whistle, Mourinho approached Buruk from behind and appeared to pinch his nose, prompting the Galatasaray coach to fall to the ground, clutching his face.
Vice-president Metin Ozturk condemned Mourinho’s actions, stating: "Our manager Okan and Mourinho congratulated the referees. After that, while Okan was continuing, Mourinho first verbally and then physically attacked him.
"Where else in the world can he do this? What does he think of Turkey?
"I believe that Fenerbahce's management will impose the necessary sanction before the federation does."
Buruk, who previously had two playing spells at Galatasaray before taking charge in 2022, played down the incident in his post-match press conference.
"There was nothing between me and Mourinho," Buruk said.
"He pinched my nose from behind. There was a slight scratch. Of course, it wasn't a very nice or elegant thing to do.
"We expect managers to behave more appropriately in such situations. I won't exaggerate this issue, but it wasn't a classy move."
The heated encounter also saw tempers flare on the sidelines, with Fenerbahce substitute Mert Yandas and Galatasaray’s Kerem Demirbay and Baris Yilmaz receiving red cards for their involvement in a stoppage-time altercation between the two benches.
Tensions between the clubs had already been high, following a goalless league draw in February when Galatasaray accused Mourinho of making "racist statements" and vowed to take legal action. The Turkish Football Federation later handed Mourinho a four-match ban and fined him £35,194 for separate disciplinary breaches.
In response, Mourinho launched a lawsuit against Galatasaray, citing an "attack on his personal rights."
