Lance McCullers Jr. of the Astros failed to get out of the first inning during Saturday's loss to the Reds at Daikin Park. But it was what happened after his outing that made headlines, and for the wrong reasons.
The Astros pitcher and his family received death threats over social media. The team contacted HPD and Major League Baseball security.
Both McCullers and manager Joe Espada reacted after the game.
“It’s been a tough evening,” McCullers said. “I understand people are very passionate and people love the Astros and love sports. But threatening to find my kids and murder them is a little bit tough to deal with."
Espada was even more upset with the situation.
“It’s very unfortunate that we have to deal with this. After all he’s done for this city, for this team, the fact that we have to talk about that in my office … I’ve got kids, too. And it really drives me nuts that we have to deal with this. Very sad. Very, very sad.”
