VP race: Barau pledges loyalty to Tinubu ahead of 2027 polls
Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, has reaffirmed his unwavering loyalty to President Bola Tinubu, stating that he is prepared to serve in any capacity the President deems fit, including as a running mate in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, Barau addressed growing calls for him to join Tinubu on the 2027 presidential ticket, emphasizing that his focus remains on supporting the President’s administration.
“I will do whatever the President wants me to do,” he said. “Mr. President has been working hard since the beginning of this administration to change the country’s trajectory and bring prosperity to the nation. We all know the challenges he inherited. We’ve been working with him day and night because he’s our father and the father of the nation.”
Barau described President Tinubu as open-minded and supportive, noting that discussions about the next election were premature.
He urged political supporters and interest groups to focus instead on governance.
“I told the groups calling for me to be a running mate that I appreciate their support, but now is not the time for such conversations. They should channel their energy toward supporting Mr. President.”
He credited Tinubu with helping to resolve political tensions in Kano and supporting his Senate bid in 2023, which paved the way for his emergence as Deputy Senate President.
“Mr. President made it possible for me to be here. So, if he asks me to do anything when the time comes, I’ll do it. I am 100% loyal to him. We are both progressives. Our faiths are tied together,” he said.
In a related development, Senator Barau announced that preparations for the review of the 1999 Constitution were underway.
He disclosed that 59 bills and 31 proposals have been submitted for consideration, and called on Nigerians to actively participate in the constitutional review process by submitting memoranda and attending zonal public hearings.
The hearings are scheduled to take place across all six geopolitical zones and will be chaired by senior members of the Senate, including the Senate President and his principal officers. Barau expressed confidence that the review process would help shape the future of the country.
