Veteran actor Manoj Kumar dies at 87 after prolonged illness; PM Modi & others pay tribute

Veteran actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar has passed away and taken his last breath at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital on Friday, April 4. The actor, best known for his movies such as Shaheed, Upkar, Purab Aur Paschim, and Roti Kapada Aur Makaan, among others, was 87 years old.

According to reports, Kumar had heart-related issues that led to his hospital admission. The hospital's medical certificate states that "decompensated liver cirrhosis" was the secondary cause of death.

Kumar, a Dadasaheb Phalke winner, was also known for hits such as "Do Badan", "Haryali Aur Rasta" and "Gumnam". He got the nickname 'Bharat Kumar'.

Following the news of his passing, tributes quickly flooded in from celebrities, politicians, and fans alike.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Kumar and wrote on X, "Deeply saddened by the passing of legendary actor and filmmaker Shri Manoj Kumar Ji. He was an icon of Indian cinema, who was particularly remembered for his patriotic zeal, which was also reflected in his films." 

Modi said Kumar's films ignited a spirit of national pride and will continue to inspire generations.

"The passing away of veteran actor-filmmaker Manoj Kumar was an irreparable loss to the art and film world.

"The demise of great actor, renowned film director, 'Padma Shri' Shri Manoj Kumar ji is extremely sad and an irreparable loss to the art and film world" Adityanath posted on X in Hindi "Humble tribute to him!My condolences are with the bereaved family. I pray to Lord Shri Ram to grant salvation to the departed soul and give strength to the bereaved family and his fans to bear this immense loss," he said.

Both expressed their deep admiration and respect for his immense contributions to Indian cinema, recalling his iconic roles and the lasting impact he made on the industry.

"I am saddened by the passing of the legendary actor & filmmaker, Manoj Kumar Sir, I had the privilege of interacting with him at many occasions , and he was truly an icon of Indian cinema. His storytelling & song picturizations in his films inspired national pride and will resonate for generations. My deepest condolences to his family members & admirers (sic)."
