Using debate to build critical thinking and communication skills (Self-paced) | European School Education Platform
When implemented with sound pedagogical understanding, debate comprehensively develops skills in thinking, argumentation, communication, and inquiry-based learning. Critical thinking and effective communication can be considered core competencies of an active citizen, and their practice should be emphasised at all educational levels.
Debating is a theoretically well-founded, practical and enjoyable educational approach when executed with careful pedagogical planning. The course provides participants with the basic competencies and resources for effective debate education.
This self-paced course is adapted from a version that ran from Monday, 27 January 2025, to Wednesday, 12 February 2025. Designed for flexibility, it lets you explore content and complete activities at your own pace—no deadlines, live sessions, or required meetings. While the original course included scheduled discussions and peer reviews, this version allows independent learning with the same materials and guidance. Forum discussions and Padlet contributions will not be moderated, fostering a fully self-directed experience. To support reflection, you'll be encouraged to assess your own work using the provided criteria.
Upon successful completion of the course, a digital course certificate is awarded. The certificate shows the name of the learner and key course details such as the estimated learning hours, the learning objectives, and a link to the course homepage.
