Unstoppable Luke Littler - everything that happened during night seven of the Premier League Darts - SportsByte
Luke Littler hit a nine-darter on his way to extending his lead at the top of the table after beating Michael van Gerwen 6-4 in the final in Cardiff.
Night seven in Cardiff started with a bottom-two clash between Chris Dobey and winless Stephen Bunting, who won the Bahrain Masters earlier on in the year.
Dobey took an early lead after winning the first two legs to give himself a two leg advantage before Bunting fought back to equalise the match 2-2.
Hollywood reclaimed the lead in the fifth leg and extended his advantage to 5-2 as Bunting missed numerous doubles. Dobey sealed the match in the eighth leg to extend Bunting’s miserable start to his Premier League campaign.
The second match of the night saw the world number Luke Humphries, who started the night just a point behind Littler, take on Michael van Gerwen.
Humphries started well and took the first two legs of the match before hitting a 10-dart leg to go three in-front. However van Gerwen refused to sit back, and eventually levelled the score at 4-4 before winning the final two legs to book his spot in the semi-finals.
The third quarter-final involved the current world champion Littler, and fan favourite Nathan Aspinall. Littler reached the final of night six but was beaten by Gerwyn Price.
The Asp has a poor record against Littler, and although The Nuke took the first leg he hadn’t quite got going in the match and Aspinall pegged him back to 1-1.
Aspinall broke Littler’s throw in the third leg to take the lead in the match. However a few consistent legs from Littler meant he restored his lead and added another one before Aspinall capitalised on the teenager’s mistakes to keep himself in the game.
Despite the Asp delivering a spirited performance, Littler took the win on the night, winning six legs to three.
Gerwyn Price came into the night looking to continue his run of good form against Rob Cross in quarter-final four after defeating Luke Littler in the final last week.
Price faltered in the first leg allowing Cross to hold his throw and take the first leg despite a number of shaky double throws. His woeful finishing continued but he eventually managed to extend his lead against the Welshman, who was playing in his home fixture this week.
The Iceman’s form improved, winning the next two legs but after missing double 16 Cross managed to find his way back with double 20 to put himself two legs ahead.
Despite Price staging a late comeback, Cross posed too much, and Voltage won the match 6-5, taking out 170 to defeat Price in his home match.
The first semi-final was between Chris Dobey and seven-time Premier League winner van Gerwen, with the latter taking the first three legs as Dobey struggled to get comfortable.
Dobey clawed a leg back for 3-1, but ultimately van Gerwen played like the world number three and hammered Dobey 6-1 to secure a place in the final against either Littler or Cross.
Semi-final two saw the current Premier League champion Littler face Cross, and Littler continued his dominant form with three straight legs.
Cross reduced the deficit but Littler pulled ahead again with an uneventful but consistent performance against Voltage, winning the match 6-2 to set up a meeting with van Gerwen in the final.
Littler won the first leg of the final against van Gerwen to break throw, but the Dutchman fired right back to equalise and take the throw back.
Luke Littler hit an absolutely spectacular nine-dart finish to put himself three legs up, finishing on treble 20, treble 17 and double 15.
After some mesmerising darts, van Gerwen carried on chasing Littler but the 18-year-old was too good and won the match 6-4 to himself six points clear of Luke Humphries at the top of the table.
