Police in Mahikeng have arrested two suspects in connection with elephant poaching following a tip-off and swift law enforcement action. Authorities believe the group initially consisted of four individuals, but two managed to evade capture and remain at large. A search operation is underway to locate the remaining suspects.

During the arrests, police recovered three elephant horns from the suspects. The Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation, and Tourism praised the collaborative efforts of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and its own officials in apprehending the alleged poachers.

“We received information that two suspects had been arrested for elephant poaching, and upon arrival, we confirmed that three elephant horns were seized,” a department spokesperson said. “We commend the police and our team for their pivotal role in this operation.”

Authorities have not yet determined the origin of the confiscated horns, as investigations are still in the early stages. However, officials suspect the involvement of a transborder criminal syndicate.

“We are not yet certain where the horns came from, but we suspect this is part of a larger cross-border poaching operation,” the spokesperson added. “Once more details emerge from the police investigation, we will share further updates.”

The arrests highlight ongoing challenges in combating wildlife crime in South Africa, where poaching remains a significant threat to endangered species. Authorities have urged the public to report any suspicious activities related to illegal wildlife trade.

Police are continuing their search for the two remaining suspects and have appealed for any information that could lead to their capture.
