Dr David Ofosu-Dorte, a prominent lawyer and a partner for AB and David has said Ghana's transport fares are dictated by a cartel of transport associations rather than market forces.

Speaking at the Joy Business Economic Forum on June 25, 2025, he highlighted the significant influence these associations have over the transport sector, attributing it to their control of key infrastructure like lorry stations.

These associations, he explained, have taken control of lorry stations, allowing them to arbitrarily determine prices for commuters.

He noted that the cartel consistently capitalizes on fuel price increases to hike fares, frequently without basis.

"The truth is, transportation fares are not determined by market forces. What we have is a cartel, deciding how much to charge, and whenever there's a fuel price increase, they correlate it to fare increases, often unjustifiable," he said.

This, he argued, enables them to maintain their grip on pricing, leaving commuters with little choice but to pay the high fares.

Dr Ofosu comments underscore the need for reform in Ghana's transport sector to introduce more competitive and market-driven pricing mechanisms.
