Tourism: Hilton Plans Over 100 New Hotels in Africa by 2030, with 4 in Nigeria in Major Expansion Drive

Global hospitality giant Hilton has announced plans to open more than 100 new hotels across Africa by 2030, aiming to nearly triple its footprint on the continent.

The ambitious expansion strategy underscores Hilton’s long-term commitment to Africa’s growing travel and tourism market.

According to ftnnews.com, the company, which currently operates 63 hotels in Africa, announced the expansion at the Future Hospitality Summit Africa 2025 in Cape Town. The development will create approximately 18,000 new jobs and introduce Hilton brands into over 15 African countries, including first-time entries in Angola, Benin, and Madagascar.

This expansion includes a diverse mix of Hilton’s flagship, lifestyle, and midscale brands such as Hilton Hotels & Resorts, DoubleTree by Hilton, Hilton Garden Inn, Canopy by Hilton, Curio Collection, and Hampton by Hilton. It represents one of the largest growth strategies in Africa’s hospitality sector and highlights Hilton’s long-standing commitment to local communities and economic development through tourism infrastructure.

Hilton will make its debut in Angola with three properties: Hilton Luanda Hotel GodinhoHilton Garden Inn Luanda Airport, and DoubleTree by Hilton Cabinda Futila Residences. These hotels will feature oceanfront villas, rooftop bars, pools, and extensive event spaces, catering to both business and leisure travelers.

In Benin, Hilton Cotonou is scheduled to open in 2028, offering 233 guest rooms and suites. The hotel will be strategically located next to key government buildings and embassies, positioning it as a new hub for business travel and conferences in West Africa.

In Madagascar, Hilton will re-enter the market with two properties: Hilton Antananarivo and Hilton Garden Inn Antananarivo. These hotels will be part of mixed-use developments and will offer a full range of business, dining, and wellness amenities.

Hilton’s expansion in Nigeria includes The Wave Hotel Abuja Jabi, Curio Collection by HiltonHilton Lagos Ikeja, and Hilton Garden Inn in Kano. These properties will add hundreds of new guest rooms and enhance the country’s capacity to host international business and leisure travelers.

The Wave Hotel Abuja will feature 93 guest rooms and be located just ten minutes from the Commercial Business District. Hilton Lagos Ikeja will open in 2029 near the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, while the Hilton Garden Inn in Kano will become the city’s first internationally branded hotel.

Hilton will continue growing across Ghana, Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Morocco. Highlights include Hampton by Hilton Accra Airport, two new DoubleTree by Hilton properties in Adama and Dire Dawa (Ethiopia), and Canopy by Hilton Zanzibar The Burj, located in Tanzania’s Fumba Town.

In Morocco, Hilton will expand its presence with the new DoubleTree by Hilton Fes Golf, adjacent to a golf course and near Fes’s UNESCO-listed medina. Hilton also plans to triple its portfolio in Egypt, with more than 40 hotels operating in the coming years.

Recent and Upcoming Openings

Hilton recently opened Canopy by Hilton Cape Town Longkloof in South Africa, the brand’s debut in the country. Located in the vibrant Longkloof precinct, the hotel offers 154 rooms, local design elements, and a restaurant led by renowned chef Bertus Basson.

In Ethiopia, Hilton also opened DoubleTree by Hilton Addis Ababa Airport, located just minutes from Bole International Airport. Last year, the company introduced Hampton by Hilton Sandton Grayston in Johannesburg, bringing friendly and accessible hospitality to South Africa’s financial district.

Later this year, Hilton will open its first hotel in Ghana—Hilton Accra Cantonments. Located in an upscale suburb near diplomatic missions, the property will feature 145 rooms, multiple dining venues, a spa, an outdoor pool, and more than 900 square metres of event space.

All new and existing properties are part of Hilton Honors, the company’s global loyalty program with more than 218 million members. Hilton’s growing footprint across Africa signals a renewed focus on unlocking the continent’s economic and tourism potential while creating memorable guest experiences in emerging destinations.
