Tinubu Administration Establishes Census Committee
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has inaugurated an eight-member Presidential Committee on the National Population and Housing Census, signaling a renewed commitment to conducting Nigeria’s first national census in nearly two decades. The committee, led by Budget and National Planning Minister Atiku Bagudu, has been tasked with delivering an interim report within 21 days and developing a roadmap for the census, including exploring financing options.
The last census in 2006 recorded Nigeria's population at 140,431,790, comprising 71,345,488 males and 69,086,302 females. Represented by his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, President Tinubu emphasized that the census is a cornerstone for national development and crucial for evidence-based policy making in healthcare, education, security, and economic planning. He stressed the need for a technology-driven approach, incorporating biometric systems and digital tools to ensure accuracy and accountability.
Tinubu directed the committee to collaborate with relevant agencies, particularly the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, to ensure effective resource allocation. Bagudu assured the President that the committee would meet the deadline, highlighting improved macroeconomic indicators as signs of Nigeria’s resilience under Tinubu’s leadership. Information Minister Idris emphasized the importance of reliable data from a credible census for effective governance and national planning.
NPC Chairman Kwarra revealed that preparatory work for the census had commenced, with the commission working with the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning and other stakeholders to identify key operational needs. Kwarra reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to a transparent, inclusive, and technology-driven enumeration process.
