The poignant display at the famous country estate saw the keepsakes planted during May as part of the hospice’s Dragonfly Appeal.

Each dragonfly – lovingly designed and handcrafted by local sculptor James Sutton – had been dedicated in memory of someone special.

A total of £93,775 has been raised by the appeal so far, which will help fund the North Derbyshire’s hospice’s vital palliative and end of life care.

Almost 2,000 limited-edition keepsakes have been dedicated with a limited number of dragonflies remaining.

Supporters who would still like to dedicate a keepsake in memory of someone close to them are being encouraged to act quickly to avoid missing out.

“The response to the appeal had been incredible,” Amy Buxton, Individual Giving Manager at Ashgate Hospice said. “We’re so grateful to everyone who has supported our appeal so far. 

“The campaign is a special way for supporters to mourn, remember and celebrate the lives of loved ones. 

“The donations will mean we can be there to provide vital care for the families who need us across North Derbyshire.” 

Thousands of visitors attended the installation after it went on display in the grounds of Chatsworth from 1 to 22 May. 

Ashgate Hospice faces growing financial challenges. Only 31% of its funding comes from the NHS, leaving a £11 million shortfall to be met through fundraising and donations.  

The stainless steel, handcrafted dragonfly is available for a suggested donation of £30 each.

Amy added: “We had so many wonderful conversations with our community at the display, many of whom came to remember someone they loved. 

“There was one visit that really stayed with me – a couple came to see the dragonflies together, and one of them was under our care and didn’t have long left.  

“They made it out to Chatsworth and couldn’t praise our team enough. It was incredibly moving. 

“Don’t worry if you haven’t dedicated your dragonfly yet – you can still get your hands on one of the beautiful keepsakes. But please be quick, we only have a limited number left. 

“Every dragonfly helps us continue delivering vital care and support to families across North Derbyshire.” 

Just 2,500 dragonflies were created for the appeal and no more will be produced. Only 500 remain available for dedication. 

After the display ends, those who have donated for a dragonfly will be able to collect their dragonfly to keep and treasure in their home or garden as an ongoing tribute and memorial to their loved one.
