Thomas A. "Gus" Bartenfeld Jr.

, 95, of Mooresville, N.C., went peacefully to his Lord and Savior on May 15, 2025. Born in Fulton County, Ga., Gus was a longtime resident of Snellville, Ga., before moving to Mooresville in recent years.

A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Gus served as a fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War with the 36th Fighter-Bomber Squadron. After his service, he owned and operated Bartenfeld Electric, specializing in commercial electrical work.

He was a faithful member of Highlands Presbyterian Church in Georgia. Gus had known the Lord since his youth.

Gus had a lifelong passion for running and coaching track, and he touched countless young lives through his years as a coach and mentor. He was also a dedicated Scoutmaster and longtime leader in the Boy Scouts of America, as well as President of the Orchid Society.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Shirley H. Bartenfeld; her daughter Cheryl H. Moore (Wayne); grandchildren Adam Moore (Ashley), David Moore (Courtney), and Lauren Williams (Cody); great-grandchildren Sadie, Adelyn, Elliot, Finley, Quinn, Aven, Maverick, and Olin; and his brother, Jerry Bartenfeld.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Carol Bartenfeld Sr.; brothers Charles and Turner; and sister, Shirley B. Harry.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 22, from 1 to 2 p.m. with a service following at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Cavin-Cook Funeral Home with grandson, Dr. Adam Moore, officiating. Burial will follow the service at Glenwood Memorial Park.
