This Mom's Hack for Self-Care at the Gym Is Genius
As almost any parent will tell you, the old cliché that there never seems to be enough hours in the day rings true. Whether you're a stay-at-home parent with your kids or you work a full-time job, there are always so many tasks on your to-do list, or some chore that never seems to get done. So the thing that often gets skipped is essential self-care, like even a shower, for example.
If this sounds familiar to you, take this genius piece of advice from a mom on Instagram who goes by @daysondewolf. In her video, she writes, “PSA: Nobody cares what you do while your kids are at the gym’s childcare.”
And she’s right! There’s no reason to be self-conscious about how you use your time at the gym.
The mom from this video, whose name is Anna, has to manage childcare and her to-do list when her young son is home with her on certain days—so she takes advantage of not just the gym, but also the showers, at her local YMCA while her son is safe in the childcare center.
In the video’s caption, Anna explains that after she found out the YMCA offered childcare on weekday mornings, she “started using it to get some me time on the days my son is home with me.”
Anna stipulates that she does a workout, although that doesn’t necessarily have to be a requirement to use the gym’s childcare facilities. As a member, you could just as easily drop off your child and take that shower that you skipped the previous day because you were too busy with laundry and prepping school lunches.
And Anna doesn’t just take a quick shower. Oh, no, she luxuriates in the alone time, as she should. She does her skin care routine, she blow dries her hair; activities she might not have time to do—uninterrupted, at least—if she had no childcare.
Anna goes on to write, “I am not exaggerating when I say I’m a whole new mom after leaving the YMCA.” These simple acts of self-care help her reset and take a much-needed break to attend to her own needs before resuming the hard work of caring for her children.
Let’s also just take a minute to thank gyms that do offer childcare. Commenters chimed in to express their own gratitude to these life-altering services.
One person wrote, “Taking my son with me to the YMCA has saved both my mental and physical health.”
“They are my village,” another commenter wrote of their local gym. “My time at the gym is so sacred to me & allows me to be a better mom.”
When communities step up to support parents, the results are happier, better cared-for families. So next time you’re at the gym, and hesitating to take that extra 15 minutes to treat yourself to an extra-long shower or a face mask while your kid is playing in the childcare center, just go ahead and do it. That’s what the help is there for, and you deserve some time to yourself.
