'These are things that drive me insane': Andrea Petkovic slams WTA over edited interview with Xinyu Wang
Andrea Petkovic has sharply criticized the WTA after an interview she conducted with Chinese tennis player Xinyu Wang was heavily edited, stripping away the player's personality and humor. Petkovic, a former top-10 player, conducted several on-court interviews at the Berlin Ladies Open, including one with tournament finalist Xinyu Wang. However, Petkovic was "insane" with the final edited version of the interview.
Wang was the absolute surprise of the tournament, battling through qualifying to reach the final. Along the way, she defeated high-profile opponents like Coco Gauff (World No. 2) and Paula Badosa (World No. 10), ultimately advancing to the final after overcoming Liudmila Samsonova. The 23-year-old had not dropped a set throughout the tournament until she faced former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova in the final.
Wang has consistently hovered around the top 30 for the past three seasons, despite some fluctuations in her ranking. While she has maintained good consistency on Tour, securing victories in significant tournaments—including a run to the semifinals of the WTA 1000 Wuhan Open last season—the 23-year-old had not yet reached a WTA final.
She achieved this milestone in Berlin, still largely unknown to most of the tennis world. On her path to her first WTA 500 final, Wang impressed with her exceptional tennis and, as Petkovic highlighted, also showcased a vibrant personality during an interview with the German.
However, Petkovic took to social media to criticize the interview's editing, stating it didn't do justice to the moment. "In my function as Director of excitement last week I conducted some of the on-court interviews with players. I had the pleasure to interview Wang Xin Yu after her semifinal win. She was hilarious, witty, smart. She had better jokes up her sleeve than most of the comedians on Netflix right now," Petkovic wrote.
She continued, "The WTA, however, posted an edited clip of her answers on their social media that made her sound like EVERY. OTHER. TENNIS. PLAYER. OUT. THERE. The one thing she said about not expecting to be in the final is what they decided to post while all the personality and humour got edited out. These are things that drive me insane as the players’ distinct personality makes the individual sport of tennis so special. Showcasing (!!) that personality for everyone to see, though, should be the logical first step. Not editing it out."
Wang ultimately fell to Vondrousova in a hard-fought final with a score of 6-7[10-12], 6-4, 2-6. This strong performance propelled her 16 spots up the rankings to No. 33. This Tuesday, she will quickly return to the court at the Bad Homburg Open, where she is set to debut against Brazil's Beatriz Haddad Maia in her final tournament before Wimbledon
Andrea Petkovic calling out the WTA for being utterly brainless and uncreative in promoting their players.
