It's not exactly fair to compare other games to the enormous shadow of Grand Theft Auto 6—the hype for Rockstar's tentpole sequel is in a league of its own, breaking far beyond the gaming zeitgeist—so let's compare GTA to... GTA.
As first spotted by u/ticklewarrior69, in just two months, the second GTA 6 trailer already has more views than the 13-year-old GTA 5 one. Granted, it's only winning by a hair, but it just goes to show how unfathomably anticipated this open world sandbox truly is.
GTA 5's trailer, which dropped on November 2, 2011, before even Skyrim had come out (yes, its been that long), has 123,030,746 views. GTA 6's second trailer, on the other hand, has an impressive 123,083,039 views. Both are still lagging behind the first GTA 6 trailer, however, which has over double that figure with 263 million views, making it the second-most watched video game trailer of all-time. I wish I could say the top spot was held by something like Minecraft or even Fortnite, but no, it's Subway Surfers.
GTA 6's second trailer came at a weird time. Rockstar had just delayed the game into next year despite promising several times that it wouldn't, and while many were understanding that games like this sometimes need more time, there was a lot of frustration that Rockstar hadn't shown off anything else to soften the blow. Then, on a random Tuesday, it did.
Completely out of the blue, without any warning, we were given a second GTA 6 trailer, showing us how far the graphics had come in the months since the first, while also giving us more detail on Lucia and Jason's story. "When an easy score goes wrong, they find themselves on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, in the middle of a conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida," the description read.
Rockstar doesn't typically show up to events for its big reveals, but even then, a random trailer drop without any fanfare is a bold move. Because it's GTA 6, though, it paid off.
