The Outlandish 'Death Of A Unicorn' Starring Jenna Ortega Roars At SXSW Premiere - mxdwn Movies

at the SXSW Film & TV Festival this weekend, having opened to a widely receptive and reactive audience. The out-of-this-world film stars Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd in leading roles. The stars were among the rest of the cast, as well as writer-director Alex Scharfman, to appear for a Q&A following the film’s screening, where they were met with an astonishing reception.

Death of a Unicorn follows Rudd and Ortega as father-daughter duo Elliot and Ridley on a road trip en route to Elliot’s affluent employer Odell Leopold’s mansion, deep in the Canadian wilderness. Things take an eccentric turn when they accidentally maim and kill a baby unicorn on their journey. Finding themselves in the middle of a nature preserve, Elliot decides to hide the body in their car, much to Ridley’s dismay. Failing to hide the secret when they arrive at the Leopold’s, the billionaire quickly has his team of scientists harvest the body as they discover its restorative properties. More blood is shed when the unicorn’s parents unexpectedly arrive, viscerating anyone who stands in the way of them reuniting with their offspring. It’s at this point the SXSW audience was sold, cheering as filmmaker Scharfman leaned into the outrageous gore, terror, and, of course, humor.

Richard E. Grant and Tea Leoni round out the cast as Leopold and his wife Belinda, respectively, with fellow A24-alum Will Poulter as their son Shepard. The film serves as Alex Scharfman’s debut feature. Actress Tea Leoni mentioned to the audience after the screening “It was so fun, and you guys cheering-that was really special,” before highlighting the movie’s prop team “They warmed up the guts for me. Isn’t that the sweetest thing?”

Death of a Unicorn hits theaters March 28. Watch the newest trailer here.
