The King’s Foundation launches programme to teach students art of costume-making

The Costume Craft Programme is supported by Amazon MGM Studios and Ascend, its global crew training programme, which will give students the opportunity to create costumes for the studios and Prime Video.

Students will also undergo industry placements focusing on craftsmanship and technical skills including leathercraft, hand-stitching, natural dyeing and sewing production.

The course is an addition to the existing textiles courses run by the foundation, which include luxury garment production, embroidery, millinery, knitting and sewing.

It is a postgraduate level programme and will be based at Dumfries House in Ayrshire, Scotland, the headquarters of the foundation, with regular set visits to Amazon MGM Studios productions.

Eight places are on offer.

The programme is fully-funded and includes tuition, materials and contributions towards required travel.

Successful applicants will each receive a £1,500 monthly bursary towards living costs.

Actress Sienna Miller, an ambassador for the foundation, said the course was a “milestone” towards protecting the art of costume design and production and that she would be meeting the students on the programme.

She said: “The craft of costumery is so integral to the TV and film industry. It’s about so much more than just clothes, it’s about creating wearable pieces of art that help tell stories and bring characters to life.

“Having seen the incredible work being done by The King’s Foundation to support emerging fashion and textile talent here in the UK, I can’t wait to meet the students taking part in this new costume craft programme and see them go on to carve out successful careers in the industry.

“This is a real milestone in protecting the future of costume design and production.”

The King’s Foundation, previously known as The Prince’s Foundation after an amalgamation of Charles’s charities in the year he turned 70, aims to “advocate for the change His Majesty wants to see in the world”.

It trains the next generation of young craftspeople in heritage and endangered skills such as millinery, embroidery and woodworking, but also focuses on sustainability, farming and agriculture, health and wellbeing, and architecture and urbanism.

Simon Sadinsky, executive director of the foundation, added: “At The King’s Foundation we pride ourselves on teaching crucial making skills that will keep traditional heritage crafts alive for future generations, and ensure we have a growing community of master craftspeople in the United Kingdom.

“This is an incredible opportunity for eight talented graduates to work on high-profile and fast-paced productions with Amazon MGM Studios to hone their skills and give them the best chance of success in a fast-growing industry.”

Applicants must complete a digital application form, a short video, and a digital portfolio.

Interviews will take place in person at Dumfries House on July 21 and 22.
