The Best Non-Traditional Celebrity Wedding Dresses, from Black Ballgowns to Bikinis

Published 2 months ago7 minute read

While some celebrities are all about the big white gown, others take a less traditional route for their wedding look.

From courthouse-ready suits to dramatic black ballgowns, see how stars including Kristen Stewart, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kourtney Kardashian, Kristin Chenoweth, Melissa Gilbert, Kristen Bell and many more put a very personal touch on their special day to create a look that was just so "them."

And while not all the marriages have lasted, the looks live on as wedding inspiration for brides who want something a little off the everyday Pinterest board.

Kourtney Kardashian's 2022 Italian wedding to Travis Barker had plenty of fashion to discuss, including the bride's Dolce & Gabbana lingerie-inspired mini, topped with a cathedral-length veil depicting religious imagery and the words "family loyalty respect" to mirror the ink on Barker's head.

The Broadway superstar was thinking pink for both her ceremony gown and reception mini when she wed Josh Bryant in Dallas in September 2023.

“I didn’t want to wear white," she told PEOPLE of the "simple and elegant" instructions she gave designer Pamella Roland for her two tied-with-a-bow bridal looks. "I never thought I’d get married, so I went very nontraditional with the gown. I love it.”

For her ninth anniversary to actor Timothy Busfield, the actress posted a throwback photo of their romantic wedding, where she wore a crimson strapless gown.

"The dress! It was quite a search," Gilbert told PEOPLE after the wedding. "The moment I saw it, I knew … and the color spoke volumes. Passion, fire, love: Red says all of those things to me."

Matching the beachy outdoor venue, the actress tied the knot to Ross Burningham in an orange printed maxi dress (which also perfectly vibed with the gorgeous sunset views during their vows).

"We did it! 1/2/22," the former talk show hosted captioned photos of the ceremony. "Ross and I said I DO! 💍🍾✨♥️🥰"

The actress added a few bridal accessories (like a white veil and bouquet of flowers) to accessorize her black long-sleeve midi dress with heeled boots that she wore to wed art director Sinisa Mackovic in March 2020.

The pair, who welcomed their son Vanja less than two months after their N.Y.C. City Hall nuptials, kept the news secret until Chloë shared a one-year anniversary pic on Instagram.

Six years after saying "I do" to Adam Levine, the model shared never-before-seen photos of her sexy, skin-baring Alexander Wang wedding dress in honor of the designer's birthday.

"This dress you made for my wedding. I'm still not over it haha!" she captioned one of her Instagram Story photos of the gown, which featured a plunging neckline and revealing slits on both sides of the dress.

After announcing their engagement in January, the supermodel wed her longtime love Antoine Arnault, the Berluti CEO, in a ceremony in Paris.

The bride kept things simple for their pared-down affair, in a strong-shoulder white blouse with purple collar, worn with a white slip midi skirt, matching pumps and thin belt at the waist.

"OUI! 💝💝💝," she captioned the happy pics.

The Selling Sunset star secretly tied the knot to her businessman hubby Christian Richard in December 2020. And she matched the gothic winter wonderland theme with her custom Galia Lahav black ballgown with sheer black veil and beaded appliqués throughout.

"I never conformed to the status quo or societal expectations," Quinn told PEOPLE of foregoing white. And even though she was "disappointed" in how her wedding was shown on the new season of the Netflix show, she always dreamed of marrying in black. "I've always enjoyed being bold, different and trendsetting. I've always wanted to get married in a black wedding dress, and I'm so happy that my dream came true."

The tattoo artist and makeup mogul ditched the traditional white gown for her second wedding to husband, musician Leafer Seyer, and went for a dramatic red gown with a cape and train courtesy of designer Adolfo Sanchez. Her look came adorned with red antlers and a person in a red bodysuit to hold her veil.

Years of posing in Vogue prepared the model to pull off her Molly Goddard pink tulle confection with turquoise accents for her summer 2019 wedding to financier Joel McAndrew in Brooklyn. Said the designer, "I got the feeling of what she was after immediately — a wedding-y wedding dress, a bit glam but not glamorous, and sparkly, which scared me a bit."

The star married Dax Shepard back in 2013, in a courthouse wedding that was so low-key, in fact, that she skipped a dress altogether, opting instead for a simple black top and pants — and a striking statement necklace for a little bit of bridal sparkle.

The model wed music mogul Jimmy Iovine in a black vintage Givenchy Haute Couture gown and oversize sculptural couture headpiece by milliner Stephen Jones for their Valentine's Day nuptials. And keeping with the nontraditional theme, all female guests (including Oprah Winfrey!) were asked to wear red.

The Newsroom star shared plenty of sweet photos from her wedding to actor Joshua Leonard – including lots of good angles of her ruffled lemon-yellow gown and vintage-inspired engagement ring.

Not only was Piper Perabo's silver sequin Michael Kors gown a memorable choice for her N.Y.C. wedding to director Stephen Kay, but the bold cathedral-length yellow veil she wore with it ensured it would not soon be forgotten.

The reigning star of street style had to go for an eye-catching choice for her June wedding to model Joannes Huebl. She certainly achieved that with her Carolina Herrera look, consisting of a cashmere sweater, lace skirt and matching shorts (yes, shorts).

A billion dollars. OK, that's not quite how much Alexandra Lenas (who married founding president of Facebook Sean Parker) spent on this romantic Elie Saab dress. But all in (including those yards of tulle and tons of sequins), the 2013 wedding cost a reported $9 million.

Sarah Jessica Parker's character Carrie Bradshaw might have had one of the most over-the-top white wedding gowns of all time, but in real life, the actress married Matthew Broderick in an off-the-rack black ruffled dress from Morgane Le Fay.

At the time, she said, her intention was to treat the wedding more like a party and not draw too much attention to herself, but she later told the TODAY show that if she could do it again, she'd have gone traditional. “[I’d] white it up,” she said. “I’d wear a beautiful, proper wedding dress like I should have worn that day.”

Many brides eschew bright white for creams and ivories, but when the actress got hitched to Josh Beech, she went to the opposite end of the color spectrum: The actress selected a dramatic midnight-and-blush Vera Wang gown from the designer's much talked-about Fall 2012 collection.

She arrived in a boat and trekked over dirt and grass to get to the altar, so it makes sense that Amber wore a laid-back midi in a mustard shade that matched the turning leaves when she married David Cross.

For her ceremony in N.Y.C., the actress opted for pale green in the form of a flowing Carolina Herrera gown (which coordinated with wife Christine Marinoni's tie) and got her fix of bridal white with a bouquet of peonies.

Bae-watch? Pamela Anderson wore a white bikini to marry Kid Rock on a yacht in St. Tropez, the first of three weddings they would hold in between July and November 2006, when they filed for divorce.
