The Best Horror Games To Beat In One Go

Published 4 days ago7 minute read

Some of the most immersive games ever made are horror games, like the recent Silent Hill 2 remake, but that can come as both a blessing and a curse - some of these games might just prove too much to handle for long periods of time, and that's completely understandable.

These horror games don't tell players what they need to do or where they need to go.

An alternative would be to look for horror games that won't torment players for hours, but rather hit like a great jump scare. Let's look at the best quick horror fixes out there, ones that are typically best enjoyed (and are most terrifying) to play through in one go.

Despite looking like a series made just for kids, it's undeniable that Five Nights at Freddy's belongs in the category of great short horror games.

FNAF puts players in the shoes of a security guard who must work nights looking at the live camera feeds from a Chuck E Cheese's-style restaurant and hoping not to get killed by its evil robot residents. It's as simple as it gets, but the innovative mechanics and the unexpectedly spooky aesthetics make this one of the few horror games that's great for adults and kids alike.

Resident Evil 3 (2020) Tag Page Cover Art

The Resident Evil 3 remake had the non-enviable task of following up on the masterful Resident Evil 2 remake. Sadly, it failed to live up to the extremely high standards set by its predecessor, but one of its failures counts as a definite win here. Yes, Resident Evil 3 has a surprisingly short campaign, one whose length pales in comparison even with the one in the original RE3, but it sure does make for a great one-sitting horror experience.

Nemesis - the relentless stalker who works as the lifeblood of this entry - remains as scary as ever, and the game's short length actually helps the mission of leaving Raccoon City as quickly as possible to gain the gravitas it needs to make the game feel scary.

There's a huge added layer of extra challenge when it comes to making a mundane setting terrifying. A convenience store is arguably the most mundane place one can visit in the modern world, and yet, this game feels like an absolute nightmare. At first, nothing looks exactly like it should, but nothing strays too far from reality to the point of accusing the owner of some sort of deal with the devil.

The Scariest Horror Video Games Of All Time, Ranked

From the torture of Doki Doki Literature Club to the eerieness of Resident Evil and Silent Hill, here are the scariest horror video games of all time.

The Convenience Store does a great job of gradually making the already eerie setting become stranger and stranger until the point of becoming unbearable. It gains extra points for coming out in 2020, a time when just about everyone in the world was still re-learning how to visit all these supposedly welcoming places.

A morgue seems like the perfect place to work for someone who wants to be spooked at any inconsequential noise they might hear, and The Mortuary Assistant makes it even cooler by adding actual demonic elements to the mix.

The Mortuary Assistant tasks players with regular mortuary tasks - sometimes ones even too banal - only to then pick the best moments in time to hit players with some of the best jump scares out there. From the setting to the execution, The Mortuary Assistant is tough to beat when it comes to a simple and satisfying horror experience.

Ever heard a bone-chilling, scary tale told by someone who was too scared for it to be made up? Fears to Fathom - Ironbark Lookout invites players to play the part of the unlucky soul who gets to witness it all and then (hopefully) survive to tell that tale. The concept is pretty simple: the main character just has to work as a forest lookout. So, think of a version of Firewatch - albeit one where things go very bad.

Though it's a very short game, Ironbark Lookout does a great job of building up the tension before its masterful climax. In a time dominated by cheap Blumhouse horror movies, Ironbark Lookout proves a much better alternative to spend two hours with the horror genre.

Though it presents itself as a run-of-the-mill anime-style dating sim, Doki Doki is anything but. Its greatest trick is reeling players into what looks like a traditional Japanese high school drama narrative right before revealing itself as the nightmare that it truly is. When it comes to games that take unexpected turns for the worse - or better, for players who are into never-ending horrors - few do it as well as Doki Doki Literature Club.

On top of its clever subversion of the genre through its story, Doki Doki forces players who really want to defeat the great evil residing within its code by actually engaging in some never-before-seen gameplay mechanics, making it a much more engaging narrative than any player would originally expect.

Most gamers grew up playing colorful, jolly-feeling 2d side scrollers. Inside is Mario and Sonic's distant dark twin. Instead of fun power-ups, players embody a child who relies only on their own wits to surpass trap after trap set up by this incredibly dystopian and increasingly lethal landscape.

Reanimal May Hope to Shed Little Nightmares Similarities, But Shouldn't Have to

Tarsier Studios may be tempted to avoid embracing its Little Nightmares past with Reanimal, but that could turn out to be its greatest strength.

Inside is a mostly silent game, and every story beat is conveyed through its masterful environmental storytelling. Inside is less about jump scares, more about dread and isolation, though it's not without some immediately mind-blowing moments that shall not be spoiled.

Iron Lung Tag Page Cover Art

Making a horror game set in the deep sea almost counts as cheating, as that's naturally one of the spookiest settings imaginable. Still, the developers behind Iron Lung didn't feel to up the ante even further. Iron Lung tasks players with the suspiciously simple enough task of taking their submarine to a few locations where they'll take some photographs, but things will naturally take a turn for the worse.

Iron Lung is a masterwork in terms of simplicity and also in building up tension. This one will make players feel the real horror and claustrophobia of being alone at the bottom of the ocean, and then do even worse by adding actual video game monstrosities to the mix.

Despite its very short duration, Paratopic is the kind of experience that will likely never leave the minds of those who've experienced it. Paratopic has a very peculiar structure - even for a game featuring a non-linear narrative, but it all adds up to the building of tension in this mystery tale that will certainly fill most players with a magnificent sense of eeriness and dread.

Nothing about this game should be spoiled before going in, but only out of respect, as this one will require players to give it some thought before they finally resolve the overarching mystery in their heads.

Mouthwashing might be one of the youngest titles on this list, but it's arguably the best of the bunch, an absolute instant classic. Spoilers: though it does feature the cleansing product mentioned in the title, it's about something else. Mouthwashing is a horror adventure set in space, one that doesn't even need any sort of alien-like element to provide spine-tingling fright.

Mouthwashing is about a group of people stranded in space whose minds are beginning to succumb to the notion that they might never make it back home alive, and it does a great job of showing that space doesn't actually prevent the screams of one's colleagues from being heard.
