Texas Fire in southern Arizona is burning east of Benson. Here's what we know
The Texas Fire burned east of Benson on Saturday evening and grew to 7 acres as portions of the nearby interstate closed, according to state transportation and fire management officials.
The fire was reported by the Arizona Department of Transportation at about 4:20 p.m. to be about 15 miles east of Benson in southern Arizona.
The agency said on social platform X that the westbound lanes of the nearby Interstate 10 were closed due to the fire near the community of Dragoon.
By 5:45 p.m., the fire grew to 3 acres of a slow-moving blaze, according to Tiffany Davila, spokesperson for the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management.
State fire crews and several engines were at the scene and were said to have stopped forward progress of the fire with additional resources, according to Davila.
Crews remained to mop up any remaining hot spots and fully extinguish the fire.
Davila said drivers should expect to see smoke on the nearby I-10.
At 6 p.m., ADOT said the left lane of westbound I-10 had reopened near the fire, but there was still no estimated time for the rest of the freeway to reopen.
The eastbound lanes of I-10 remained open. ADOT encouraged travelers to check az511.com for real-time traffic updates.
