Terminal 2 to handle domestic, international flights - Minister
Work has already been completed on the first phase.
This is aimed at decongesting the pressure at Terminal Three, the main terminal for international travels in the country.
Currently, terminal two only handles domestic and regional flights.
The Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, who announced this said: “We are positioning terminal two to handle both domestic and international travellers, allowing us to relieve some of the pressure on terminal three.”
The minister was speaking during a working visit to the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL).
It formed part of efforts to advance the airport infrastructure to position the country as a preferred aviation hub in West Africa.
Mr Nikpe also interacted with GACL staff, and reiterated the importance of their work in enhancing the travel experience for passengers.
He toured the construction of the new 11-storey GACL head office, scheduled for completion in 24 months, and designed to house offices, multipurpose spaces and meeting facilities.
The minister highlighted the necessity of improving airport facilities to boost regional connectivity, saying “we cannot overstate the importance of these improvements without seeing the work on the ground”.
Mr Nikpe further explained that the project was expected to significantly enhance passenger experience at the airport.
He said it would also help to optimise the use of existing infrastructure, and support anticipated growth in airline operations at KIA.
The minister, therefore, impressed on management of the KIA to ensure the timely completion of the project, including the rehabilitation and expansion of airport facilities.
“Some projects have timelines of two years, especially the head office complex.
However, we are hopeful that by the end of this year or early next year, the renovations will be fully completed,” he said.
