According to civic technology platform, Monitng, the platform raised the alarm in a public message to Governor Agbu Kefas, urging an immediate state government's intervention to prevent avoidable loss of life.

The only primary healthcare centre serving Tasompo community, Zing Local Government Area of Taraba State, is in a state of severe disrepair, with no electricity, no medical equipment, and a dangerously damaged structure.

According to civic technology platform, Monitng, the platform raised the alarm in a public message to Governor Agbu Kefas, urging an immediate state government's intervention to prevent avoidable loss of life.

Residents reportedly endure critical medical conditions, including childbirth, under leaking roofs and collapsing ceilings, while health workers rely on kerosene lamps for visibility at night.

“Dear Gov GovErnie of Taraba state Agbu Kefas, We visited the only Primary Healthcare Centre in Tasompo, Zing LGA, Taraba State, and what we found was deeply troubling,” Monitng said.

“Over 4,300 residents depend on this facility, which suffers from leaking roofs, collapsing ceilings, and a lack of basic medical equipment.

Without electricity, healthcare workers resort to using kerosene lamps at night. In emergencies, patients must travel long distances to access better-equipped facilities.”

While the Taraba State government is said to have allocated resources to the health sector over the past three years, Monitng noted that specific budget figures for 2023, 2024, and 2025 are not available in the public domain, raising concerns about transparency.

“Despite these challenges, the Taraba State government has allocated funds to the health sector in recent years.

However, specific budget figures for 2023, 2024, and 2025 are not readily available in public records.

Additionally, international donors have provided support to Nigeria's health sector, aiming to improve healthcare infrastructure and services. Yet, the impact of these funds on facilities like the one in Tasompo remains unclear.”

The group questioned the disconnect between financial allocations and the lived realities of rural communities like Tasompo.

“The disconnect between allocated budgets, donor support, and on-the-ground realities raises concerns about transparency and accountability. Residents of Tasompo deserve access to safe and functional healthcare facilities.

The Taraba State government and relevant stakeholders must ensure that allocated resources effectively reach and improve local health centres.”

It warned that residents’ rights to health and dignity were being undermined by government inaction and bureaucratic failures.

“Healthcare is a fundamental right, not a privilege. No community should be left behind due to administrative oversights or mismanagement of funds.

Immediate action is needed to address the deplorable conditions of the Tasompo Primary Healthcare Centre and to ensure that all residents have access to quality medical care.”

“The people of Tasompo are not asking for luxury, just the basic dignity of a safe, working health centre.

It's time for the Taraba State government to translate its health budgets into tangible improvements.

Every resident deserves the assurance that, in times of illness or emergency, they can receive care without unnecessary hardship.”
