This Father’s Day, while many are gifting cards and planning barbecues, former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is urging people to give something more meaningful: a conversation that could save lives. In a recent article for The Telegraph, Sunak shared a deeply personal message about the importance of talking to fathers about prostate cancer – the most common cancer among men in the UK.

Sunak, who has served as an ambassador for Prostate Cancer Research, emphasizes how few men proactively seek testing, especially since early-stage prostate cancer typically has no symptoms. According to The Telegraph article, just 7% of people are aware that prostate cancer is symptomless in its early stages, making early detection nearly impossible without testing.

He recalls conversations with men across the UK who falsely believe that as long as “everything is functioning,” they’re in the clear. But this misunderstanding is proving fatal: one in eight men will be diagnosed in their lifetime, rising to one in four for Black men. If caught early, prostate cancer has a high success rate; if diagnosed late, treatment becomes far less effective, with survival rates falling below 50%.

Sunak is calling for a national screening programme to address this silent crisis. With prostate cancer diagnoses up 25% in the past five years, the urgency is clear.

So this Father’s Day, go beyond the usual small talk. Ask your dad if he’s been tested. Share the facts. Encourage action. Because sometimes the most loving thing we can do is ask an uncomfortable question—and insist on an answer.
