The Masque of the Red Death was first published in 1842 and follows a prince who hides in his abbey to avoid a dangerous plague, known as the Red Death.
There's no word yet on what this new take will be like, but Charlie Polinger is writing and directing the project, which is due to begin shooting this year.
If you've been missing Sweeney at the cinema, you'll be pleased to know she's currently filming The Housemaid alongside Amanda Seyfried.
Based on Freida McFadden’s 2022 novel, it follows a struggling woman (Sweeney) who begins to work as a housemaid for a wealthy couple (played by Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar), only to discover they harbour some dangerous family secrets.
The Housemaid is directed by Bridesmaids helmer Paul Feig from a script by Rebecca Sonnenshine. Alongside Sweeney and Seyfried the film also stars Italian actor Michele Morrone.
Announcing the film, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group co-president Erin Westerman said: "Part of the fun of the book was imagining the cast while we read it, and Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried are perfect for Millie and Nina.”
“We’re thrilled to team them with Paul Feig, who we worked with on A Simple Favour and its upcoming sequel, and has a proven track record of developing stories with dynamic female leads.”
