Ahmedabad sees rise in gastroenteritis and cholera cases over past 25 days

AHMEDABAD: During the summer season, complaints about drinking water contamination increased in Ahmedabad city. Particularly, there were rising complaints about contamination in the drinking water supply in the eastern part of the city managed by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.

As a result, cases of waterborne diseases emerged in the city. According to epidemic data released by the health department of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, there were 640 cases of gastroenteritis, 193 of jaundice, 312 of typhoid, and 21 of cholera recorded from May 1 to May 25, 2025. All these were indoor patients admitted to private or govt hospitals for treatment.In different areas of the eastern part of Ahmedabad city, 18 cases of cholera were reported.

Meanwhile, three cases were noted in various areas of the western part of the city. The Lambha area recorded the highest number of six cholera cases.Additionally, Behrampura reported three cases of cholera. There was one case each in Saraspur, Gomtipur, Ramol, Jamalpur, Navrangpura, Gota, Chandlodiya, Vatva, Bhaipura, Dariapur, Maninagar, and Shahibaug. Besides this, in the 25 days of May, there was one case of chikungunya, 19 cases of dengue, and 50 cases of simple malaria.

In May 2024, a total of 32 cholera cases were recorded in one month. In contrast, 21 cholera cases were already reported from May 1 to May 25, 2025, with the possibility of an increase.The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation is collecting water samples from areas suspected of contamination to curb the rising waterborne diseases in the eastern part of the city. Over 25 days, 44,586 water samples were collected from various parts of the city for chlorine testing, and 53 samples were found to lack chlorine.

Additionally, 5,794 water samples underwent bacteriological testing, with 43 samples deemed unfit.It is noteworthy that from January 1 to May 25, 2025, Ahmedabad city recorded 2,994 cases of gastroenteritis, 931 cases of jaundice, 1,558 cases of typhoid, and 47 cases of cholera.It is significant to note that compared to May 2024, the statistics for waterborne diseases increased in May 2025. In May 2024, there were 1,935 cases of gastroenteritis, 198 of jaundice, 565 of typhoid, and 32 of cholera. In contrast, from May 1 to May 25, 2025, there were 2,994 cases of gastroenteritis, 931 of jaundice, 1,558 of typhoid, and 21 of cholera.
