Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has reaffirmed Nigeria’s determination to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

In an interview with the Saudi Pro League in Ar Rass, the experienced defender reflected on the pride and responsibility of leading one of Africa’s most football-passionate nations.

“It’s an incredible honour to captain Nigeria,” Troost-Ekong said. “This role carries a great sense of duty because Nigeria is a football powerhouse blessed with so much talent. Yet, despite our potential, we haven’t always met expectations.”

The 30-year-old, who was a key figure during Nigeria’s impressive run to the final at the 2023 AFCON in Côte d'Ivoire, believes the current squad has the right mix of ability and ambition to go a step further.

“I’m really enjoying the journey and giving everything I have to the team,” he added. “With the group of players we have now—immensely talented and motivated—our focus is to win the next AFCON and ensure Nigeria is present at the 2026 World Cup.”

Troost-Ekong also acknowledged the team’s narrow miss in their last AFCON campaign, using it as fuel to push harder ahead of the 2025 tournament in Morocco.

“We came very close last time, and that experience has made us even hungrier. As captain, the goal is now even more personal. We want to bring joy to Nigerians by achieving something truly special.”
