Sundar Pichai on AI-Driven Platform Shift

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, announced that artificial intelligence (AI) is driving a significant platform shift, granting global access to decades of research for individuals, businesses, and communities. Google is accelerating the release of products featuring advanced AI models, features, and capabilities.
According to Pichai, AI overviews are boosting query growth by over 10% in major markets like the US and India. He emphasized that the sustained growth over time is particularly encouraging, calling it one of the most successful search launches in the last decade. Google is set to launch AI mode for search in the US, offering advanced reasoning for complex queries.
Google has made substantial investments in AI, including a recent $75 billion investment in an AI data center. The company is intensifying its focus by integrating AI across its range of products and services. These developments intensify the competition in the AI sector among major players like Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI, as they vie for dominance with AI coding agents, data center infrastructure, and AI models capable of processing multimodal data, including audio and video.
Pichai revealed that the Gemini app has surpassed 400 million monthly active users, while AI overviews in search have reached over 1.5 billion users in select countries, including the US. Google plans to expand its availability to over 200 countries and territories. Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind Technologies, announced that an updated version of Gemini 2.5 Flash would be available starting in June 2025.
