Subaru and Subaru, the sequel to Initial D and MF Ghost, launches in a few weeks. As the debut approaches, the series’ plot summary and setting has emerged. Apparently it will take place after the events of MF Ghost, in the same universe that Initial D occurs in. There’s also a new image of the ZD8 Subaru BRZ (above) that will be one of the star cars int he series.

As predicted, the main characters, Subaru Kudo and Subaru Sato hail from Kanagawa and Gunma, respectively. The two are inspired by the events of MF Ghost, in which Kanata, a student of Initial D‘s AE86-driving protagonist Takumi, proves his incredible wheelmanship of a ZN6 Toyota 86 in the MFG racing series. The Subarus each decide to enter the MFG series, one of the last events with human-driven cars on public roads in a world of autonomous cars.

The story promises to weave the worlds of Initial D and MF Ghost together. Based on teasers, it appears that Takumi, his father Bunta, the old Akina Speedstars gang, and the rotary-driving Takahashi brothers will all make appearances in Subaru and Subaru. From MF Ghost, shop owner Ogata and arrogant R35 driver Aiba are also seen. Subaru and Subaru debuts on July 22 in Young Magazine, almost 30 years to the day after Initial D‘s July 17, 1995 premiere.
