Stephen A. Smith calls out LeBron James, makes violent claim about Bronny exchange
After LeBron James addressed his exchange with Stephen A. Smith about his son Bronny on The Pat McAfee Show, the ESPN personality responded. Speaking on his podcast, Smith said he would’ve “swung” on James if the Lakers superstar put his hands on him.
While speaking with McAfee on Tuesday – the interview aired Wednesday – James said Smith “missed the whole point” of their conversation. A fan caught video of the exchange, and Smith later addressed it on First Take.
Smith had a strong response Wednesday night. In the process, he noted if James touched him, he was ready to answer accordingly.

“When he approached me while I was sitting courtside at that game against the New York Knicks, when he rolled up on me – I didn’t know he was going to roll up on me. I had no idea,” Smith said on The Stephen A. Smith Show. “But when he said what he had to say, I was in no position to give any kind of retort without making a scene. It was during the third quarter, it was fresh out of a timeout, it was him walking to the basketball court, it was on national television. The cameras were rolling, and had I done something, what do y’all want me to do? You want this to be a reincarnation of Chris Rock and Will Smith?
“And let me say for the record that while we bring up that, let me assure you, it wouldn’t have gone down like that. I would have gotten my ass kicked because if that man put his hands on me, I would’ve immediately swung on him. Immediately. That, I’m not going to tolerate. But I knew he wasn’t going to do something like that. There was no fear in my mind about it. There was shock, because as I have repeatedly stated, I was not talking about his son. I was talking about him.”
Smith addressed the situation on First Take the next day, although he said he didn’t initially plan on doing so. That’s another reason why James called him out while speaking with McAfee. He said Smith got “personal” with his comments, which is why he had to “protect my damn household.”
“He’s on like a Taylor Swift tour run right now,” James said. “It started off with, ‘I didn’t wanna address it, I wasn’t gonna address it, but since the video came out, I feel the need to address it.’ Are you kidding me? If there’s one person who couldn’t wait till the video had dropped so you could address it, it’s your ass. He completely missed the whole point. The whole point. Never would I ever not allow people to talk about the sport and criticize players about what they do on the court. That is your job to criticize or being in a position to where if a guy’s not performing. That is all part of the game.
“But when you take it and you get personal with it, it’s my job to not only protect my damn household but protect the players. I think a lot of the media — including him and I know he’s gonna be happy as hell, smiling ear to ear when he hears me talking about him, he’s gonna get home and grab some ice cream out of the f***ing freezer and sit in his chair in his tighty whities on the couch. Like, relax, bro. Relax. Seriously.”
