Staying safe in the heatwave

Published 9 hours ago1 minute read

With a severe heatwave expected to grip Greece on Thursday and Friday, civil protection officials have issued a series of safety guidelines aimed at protecting the public from extreme temperatures that are expected to exceed 40°C (104°F) in many parts of the country, including the capital, Athens.

Authorities urge residents and tourists to take precautions, particularly to safeguard vulnerable groups such as young children, seniors and individuals with underlying health conditions.

Basic precautions include:

• Staying indoors during peak heat hours, opting for air-conditioned or well-ventilated spaces, and avoiding crowded areas.

• Limiting physical exertion outdoors, including work, exercise and sunbathing.

• Wearing protective gear like hats, sunglasses, sunscreen and loose, breathable clothing– ideally made of cotton.

Choosing lighter meals, rich in fruits and vegetables, and reducing intake of heavy or greasy foods.
Keeping hydrated by drinking water and natural juices, while steering clear of alcohol.

Municipalities are also operating designated cooling centers in community halls, senior centers and select sports facilities, offering relief to those without adequate shelter, including the homeless.
