St Mary's English Medium School, Kannarpady, Udupi, organised a one-day training workshop for its teaching staff on "Promoting mental health and wellness among students". The programme, held at JP Tauro Hall, commenced on Saturday, June 28, with a prayer song by the teachers' choir, setting a serene tone for the event.

Sweeta Rego extended a warm welcome to the principal, vice principal and the resource persons from COE, Bengaluru, participants, followed by the symbolic inauguration by lighting the lamp.

The resource persons, Karen D’Souza, principal, Kanachur Public School, Deralakatte, Mangaluru, who is an experienced educator, and Radhakrishna Holla B, vice principal, Sri Sathya Sai Lok Seva Vidyakendra, alike, who is a seasoned counsellor and educator, shared valuable insights on how teachers can support students' emotional and mental needs. They emphasised the importance of creating a safe and supportive learning environment, where students feel comfortable opening up about their concerns.

Through interactive sessions, group discussions, handout activities, and case studies, the teacher delegates gained in-depth knowledge on techniques and methods to promote mental well-being in students. Some of the key takeaways from the workshop included, recognising early signs of mental health issues in students, strategies for building resilience and stress management, creating a positive classroom environment that fosters emotional well-being, Effective communication techniques to support students' mental health needs, Importance of self-care and mindfulness for teachers.

The programme was attended by principal Fr Vijay Joyson D'Souza and vice principal Rita Quadros, who added to the discussions and emphasised the school's commitment to prioritizing students' mental health and well-being.

The workshop concluded with the National Anthem, after a vote of thanks was proposed by Sonia Shetty. The workshop was anchored by Alita Rebello, ensuring a smooth flow of proceedings.

The training equipped the teachers with essential skills and knowledge to promote mental health and wellness among students, enabling them to be frontline responders to students' emotional and mental needs.
