The School of Politics, Policy and Governance (SPPG) has called on Nigerians to ensure regular checks on their mental health, adding that it limits not only individual but also national growth.

Chief Executive Officer of SPPG (Africa), Alero Ayida-Otobo, who made the disclosure in Abuja recently, said the school was championing the campaign to boost mental health, which is why it convened a conference on ‘Big Ideas with a focus on mental health.

She said, “WHO noted that middle and low-income countries account for 70 per cent of brain diseases and mental disorders, including Nigeria, which is why there is a need for the FCT and states to take the issue of mental wellbeing seriously for workers.”

She added that “The Big Ideas platform serves as a platform for mentorship and innovation, especially for young Nigerians planning to thrive in different future careers.”

Also speaking, Dr Emma Sky, founding Director at Yale Leadership Centre, noted that government at the federal, state and local levels must strive to inculcate mental health and well-being, which are essential to boost citizens’ contributions to national development.
