Spotify reaches 100 million paying subscribers across Europe | Digital | Music Week
Spotify's latest Europe-wide data shows that EU artists generated over €1.7 billion in 2024 – a 15% year-on-year increase. It is nearly double the total of 2020 and more than triple that of 2017.
The news comes as Spotify’s founder and CEO, Daniel Ek, revealed that Spotify has reached 100 million paying subscribers across Europe (including the UK) at Spotify’s Open House event yesterday.
For the second year in a row, as part of its Loud & Clear initiative, Spotify has reported artist royalty payments from across Europe at large, shining a light on the current streaming economy, the players, and the process.
“Giving millions of artists and creators the opportunity to live off their art, the latest data from Spotify provides further transparency on the economics of music streaming and royalty models across the EU,” said a statement.
It follows Loud & Clear data for 2024 covering global and UK artist revenues generated via Spotify. The figures cover all payments to rights-holders, including artists, songwriters, labels and publishers.
European artists were discovered almost on Spotify in 2024 globally. More than EU artists were added to editorial playlists in 2024 – up 4% from 2023.
In total, Europeans listened to European artists times in 2024. Meanwhile, almost user-generated playlists in the USA in 2024 integrated European artists, followed by Mexico (more than 183 million playlists), and Brazil (close to 148 million playlists).
In 2024, more than generated over €10,000 – with more than generating over €5,000.
Spotify reported that of all royalties generated in the EU were from EU artists in 2024, remaining the highest level since data records began (2017-2024). Over half of all royalties generated by EU artists were by artists who perform in a non-English language (57%) – this also being the highest the platform has seen since records began (2017-2024).
Over the past four years, female European artists have seen a large increase in streams, both on a global (up ) and a European (up ) level. The growth figures are 11% (globally) and 4% (EU-wide) for 2023-24.
More than have been incorporated into Spotify’s Equal programme since its launch.
Seven of the top 10 performing languages on Spotify are European languages: Spanish, German, Portuguese, French, Italian, Dutch and Swedish.

Spotify said that it showcases how the platform is key to the export of European talent. Average year-on-year growth for European exports beyond European borders in between 2014 and 2024 reached 32% growth.
Key takeaways from specific regions across Europe:

That is why we’re delighted to celebrate Spotify’s European Loud and Clear data for the second year running – providing artists and creators across the EU and the world transparency around the economics of music streaming.
"In 2024, EU artists generated a record-breaking €1.7B on platform alone – a figure that has almost doubled since 2020. We’re also excited EU creators are continuing to transcend global borders, with over half of all royalties generated by EU artists that perform in a non-English language.”
