Southeast Development: Umahi says Tinubu government inherited no projects, security improves

National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu stated that the 'sit-at-home' order in the South-East, enforced by separatist groups, is weakening due to improved security conditions. Speaking at the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Summit in Abuja, Ribadu presented the Federal Government's two-year scorecard, highlighting progress under President Bola Tinubu's administration in key security areas. He noted that significant figures of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), have been either captured or neutralized, which has considerably diminished the separatist campaign. Ribadu affirmed that attacks on security personnel in the region have decreased, and over 50 police stations and posts have been rebuilt as social and economic activities resume in the South-East.

In the North-West, Ribadu described the past year as a “watershed” in combating armed banditry, stating that 11,250 hostages have been rescued since President Tinubu assumed office, reducing mass abductions. Key warlords such as Ali Kachalla, Boderi, Halilu Sububu, Dangote, Isuhu Yellow, and Damuna have been eliminated. Over 50 leaders, known as ‘Kachalas,’ more than 70 deputy commanders, and hundreds of foot soldiers have been neutralized, with over 35 warlords surrendering under the government’s ‘Kaduna Model’ non-kinetic strategy. A new process, Operation Safe Corridor North West, supports deradicalization and reintegration.

Regarding the North-East, Ribadu reported substantial gains in the counter-insurgency campaign, with over 13,543 terrorists and criminals neutralized and more than 124,408 Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters and their family members surrendering. Security forces have recovered and destroyed at least 11,118 weapons and over 252,596 rounds of ammunition. Operations in the Timbuktu Triangle, Tumbu islands, and other enclaves are ongoing, with a focus on community resettlement and economic recovery.

In the Niger Delta, security efforts have led to the dismantling of 1,978 illegal refineries and the destruction of 3,849 dugout pits and 3,773 illegal cooking ovens, resulting in a 47 percent drop in infractions. All pipelines are now fully operational, with production rising to an average of 1.8 million barrels per day. Oil production in Ogoniland is set to resume after more than three decades, thanks to Operation Delta Safe.

Ribadu also addressed the government’s response to cyber threats, citing the Binance investigation as prompting a crackdown on criminal activities linked to cryptocurrency platforms. Suspicious accounts connected to terrorism, banditry, and separatist activities have been shut down, and a new Critical National Information Infrastructure Protection Plan has been approved and is being implemented. The National Digital Forensic Laboratory is supporting military and law enforcement investigations.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, mentioned that President Bola Tinubu's administration inherited almost no projects in the Southeast region but has since initiated significant interventions. Projects such as the Owerri to Onitsha road, Enugu to Onitsha road, and Enugu to Abakaliki road are ongoing, and the Second Niger Bridge is progressing steadily. Umahi commended President Tinubu for prioritizing infrastructure to grow the nation’s GDP, highlighting the transformative Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as a strategic economic artery. The APC National Summit saw attendance from key figures including President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and other high-ranking officials.
