Sokoto gov commissions water scheme to tackle shortages
Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has inaugurated a township water scheme designed to produce three million gallons daily to address the state’s long-standing water scarcity.
During the commissioning ceremony at the Old Airport Water Scheme site, Aliyu described the project as a significant milestone in his administration’s plan to reactivate and complete six township water schemes across the metropolis. Upon completion, the broader initiative is expected to generate 40 million gallons of water daily, significantly alleviating water shortages in the state.
“It gives me great pleasure to mark this significant milestone in our commitment to improving the quality of life for the people of Sokoto State. Today, we are commissioning one of six township water schemes, an important step towards ensuring a steady and improved supply of clean water,” Aliyu said.
The governor highlighted the dire water situation his administration inherited, with residents paying N200 to N300 per jerrycan of water due to a lack of essential water treatment chemicals and outdated infrastructure. He noted that swift interventions had restored regular water supply to Sokoto and surrounding areas, though challenges resurfaced recently due to low electricity voltage and declining river water levels.
To address these issues, Governor Aliyu said obsolete equipment had been replaced, and additional power sources were provided to the State Water Board. Contracts have also been awarded for the completion of six water schemes, including the Tamaje, Old Airport, Gagi, Mana, Runjin Sambo, and Ruga Liman Water Schemes, conceived initially under former governor Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko.
The governor revealed that the entire project is valued at over N14 billion, with steady progress being made on the remaining schemes.
“These are not just projects; they are promises fulfilled, meant to alleviate the suffering caused by water scarcity and to empower our communities for a more resilient and prosperous Sokoto,” he added.
Aliyu appreciated the dedication of stakeholders, contractors, and community leaders and thanked the people of Sokoto for their support and resilience.
