Snow, icy roads expected to cause trouble in western WA Thursday

Published 1 month ago2 minute read

- Snow has made a return to the Puget Sound region, sparking concerns for commuters as icy conditions could make for a dangerous drive Thursday morning. Combined with melting snow from earlier this week, refreezing overnight could create hazardous driving conditions for those heading out in the morning.

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) has been out with 50 plows and deicers working round the clock since Saturday night to keep streets clear. However, the steep inclines in areas like Queen Anne, Magnolia, Beacon Hill, and Capitol Hill could prevent plows from reaching covered streets. In conditions like these, the big rigs may need to avoid narrow streets as well.

SDOT also reminds the public to clear snow and ice from sidewalks and curb ramps around homes and businesses. It's not only a legal requirement but is also important for the safety of all pedestrians, especially those with mobility challenges.

"I think we were surprised by the amount of snow overnight," said Shawn Hawks of King County Metro. "We're going to continue to see cold weather and snow in the forecast for at least the next week or so."

King County Metro has adjusted to the changing weather conditions by redirecting buses to flatter, safer routes when snow and ice are present. Buses are also being equipped with chains to improve traction and ensure safer travel.

For those relying on Metro buses, it’s important to stay updated. You can text your bus stop number to 62550 for the most up-to-date schedule or sign up for weather-related alerts on Metro's website.
