Sinner and Swiatek Advance to Second Round at French Open

The French Open kicked off with notable victories for top contenders and some surprising results in the opening round. Men's top seed and world number one Jannik Sinner of Italy began his Roland-Garros campaign successfully, defeating home favourite Arthur Rinderknech of France in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, 7-5. The match, lasting two hours and 17 minutes, saw Sinner overcome a challenging third set where he recovered from being two breaks down and a 0-4 deficit, ultimately winning seven of the final eight games. Sinner showed no signs of any lingering issues from his Italian Open final defeat to Carlos Alcaraz, efficiently converting break points in the first two sets. "First round matches, they are never easy," Sinner commented. "I'm very happy with how I handled the situation, especially in the third set. Coming through in straight sets means a lot. We have played each other a couple of times before, so we know each other a little bit. He is an amazing player." Sinner's next opponent will be veteran Frenchman Richard Gasquet.

Sinner's victory marked his 15th consecutive win at Grand Slam tournaments, a streak that includes his US Open title in late 2024 and the Australian Open crown earlier this year. This achievement places him among elite company, as he is only the fifth man in the last 20 years to reach this milestone, following Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and his rival Carlos Alcaraz.

Second seed Carlos Alcaraz of Spain also advanced smoothly, dispatching Italian qualifier Giulio Zeppieri with a 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 victory. Other results in the men's draw saw Holger Rune overcome Roberto Bautista-Agut in four sets, and Casper Ruud defeat Albert Ramos-Vinolas in three sets.

However, the men's draw witnessed its first major upset as fourth seed Taylor Fritz of the USA was eliminated by Germany's Daniel Altmaier. The world number 66, Altmaier, played a relatively error-free match to win 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. In contrast, Fritz struggled with consistency, committing 41 unforced errors against 34 winners, marking his earliest exit from Roland-Garros since 2018.

In the women's draw, reigning champion Iga Swiatek of Poland began her title defense with a solid 6-3, 6-3 win over Slovakia's Rebecca Sramkova. Swiatek noted the challenge posed by her opponent, stating, "For sure it wasn't an easy match especially because she played with a lot of freedom and I felt like she was going for her shots, especially the forehands down the line. I knew I needed to stay proactive and try to create and use my weapons and that's what I did." Swiatek will next face 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu.

Emma Raducanu, the 22-year-old Briton, secured her place in the second round by defeating China's Wang Xinyu in a hard-fought three-set match, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

For the Chinese contingent, the tournament has seen early exits. Bu Yunchaokete fell to Austrian qualifier Filip Misolic in a four-set battle, 5-7, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4), 6-1. Following the first-round losses of Bu Yunchaokete, Wang Xinyu, and Yuan Yue in the singles competition, Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen is the sole Chinese player remaining in the singles draw. Zheng is set to play Colombia's Emiliana Arango in her second-round match. Meanwhile, Yuan Yue is scheduled to participate in the women's doubles, teaming up with Lulu Sun of New Zealand for their first-round match on Tuesday.
