All of P.E.I. was under a severe thunderstorm watch Thursday afternoon, with Environment Canada saying a weather system over the Island was capable of producing strong winds and torrential rain.

"Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain," the weather agency said just before 3 p.m. AT on Thursday.

The federal weather agency had earlier issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Prince County before downgrading it back to a watch. Just after 3:20 p.m., Queens County was upgraded to a warning before falling back to the lesser alert level.

"Lightning is always my main concern with thunderstorms, especially early in our summer season as lightning safety isn't always top of mind," said CBC meteorologist Jay Scotland. "It is always important to head indoors at the first sound of thunder.

"The risk for scattered thunderstorms risk continues through the afternoon, before diminishing early this evening, so please keep an ear to the sky."
