Amidst growing concerns over the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa West has taken a proactive step in seeking a resolution.
Following the contentious decision that saw Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan suspended for six months, Senator Dickson has positioned himself as a mediator, advocating for a reconsideration of the punitive measures imposed by the Senate.
Dickson, a seasoned lawmaker known for his diplomatic engagements, clarified that he was not part of the decision-making process that led to the suspension, as he was attending a three-day workshop on the Tax Reform Bills.
He expressed concern over the abrupt nature of the proceedings and emphasized the importance of ensuring fairness and due process in legislative matters.
In a demonstration of solidarity, Senator Dickson led a delegation of opposition lawmakers to visit Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan and her husband at their residence.
The visit, which was marked by discussions on the circumstances surrounding her suspension, was aimed at reassuring the embattled senator and exploring possible avenues for resolution.
“Legislators must stand by each other in difficult times,” Senator Dickson said. “While we uphold the integrity of the Senate, we must also ensure that justice and fairness are upheld.
“Having heard directly from Senator Natasha and her husband, I will engage with my colleagues and Senate leadership to seek a resolution that reflects the principles of equity.”
The suspension, which was based on alleged breaches of Senate rules, has sparked widespread debate, with supporters of Akpoti-Uduaghan arguing that it was politically motivated.
Dickson’s intervention is seen as a significant step in mitigating tensions and advocating for a more balanced resolution to the crisis.
As the Senate prepares for further deliberations, political analysts suggest that Dickson’s involvement could pave the way for a compromise that might see a reduction in the suspension period or a reconsideration of its terms.
