Self-care isn't just for women: Why men must take their health seriously - Sun City Independent

Published 1 day ago3 minute read

In the midst of Men’s Health Month, it’s crucial to address a pervasive misconception: self-care is often seen as a practice primarily for women. This outdated notion overlooks the fact that men, too, face unique health challenges and deserve to prioritize their well-being.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, men are more likely to die from heart disease, cancer and unintentional injuries than women.

They are also less likely to visit the doctor regularly or seek help for mental health issues. If we want to close that gap, we need a culture shift — one that encourages men to view self-care not as a luxury, but as a survival strategy. Organizations like evolvedMD and HealthyU Clinics are leading the charge in redefining what self-care looks like for men.

Men’s health encompasses more than just physical strength; it includes mental, emotional and overall well-being. Taking proactive steps to maintain your health can lead to a more energetic and fulfilling life. Regular physical activity, balanced nutrition and adequate sleep are foundational elements.

However, mental health is equally vital. Stress management techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, or deep breathing exercises, along with seeking professional help when needed, are essential components of a comprehensive self-care routine.

Integrating behavioral health into primary care involves embedding licensed therapists within primary care settings, which makes mental health services more accessible and reduces the stigma associated with seeking help. This approach at evolvedMD ensures that men can address both physical and mental health concerns in a holistic manner.

Offering a wide range of services tailored to men’s health — from testosterone replacement therapy to erectile dysfunction management — is a comprehensive care model that ensures that men receive the support they need. HealthyU Clinics also recognized the importance of behavioral health in addressing the full spectrum of men’s health needs and partnered with evolvedMD to provide integrated mental health services.

Self-care isn’t about spa days and scented candles — unless that’s what you need. It’s about taking intentional steps to care for your physical, mental and emotional health. It’s going to the doctor before something becomes urgent. It’s talking to a therapist without shame. It’s setting boundaries, getting enough sleep and managing stress in healthy ways.

Men who want to pursue self-care aren’t on their own: “21 Self-Care Ideas” from medical professionals themselves includes activities such as reading, spending time outdoors, engaging in creative pursuits and practicing gratitude. These practices not only enhance personal well-being but also foster a culture of self-care.

Keep tabs on your blood pressure, cholesterol and hormone levels. Clinics that offer men’s wellness programs that make it easy to stay on top of your health.

This Men’s Health Month, let’s challenge the stigma surrounding men’s self-care. It’s time to recognize that prioritizing one’s health is not a sign of weakness but a commitment to living a fulfilling life. Whether it’s seeking professional help, engaging in physical activity or simply taking time to relax, every step counts. Remember, self-care isn’t just for women — it’s for everyone.
