SDP faction opposes anti-Tinubu coalition

A faction of the Social Democratic Party, led by Chief Wole Adesina, has distanced itself from a growing political coalition aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu, warning that such efforts lack a clear vision for Nigeria’s future.

In a statement on Monday, the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Alfa Mohammed, decried what he described as an “influx of aggrieved politicians” forming desperate alliances to “send President Bola Tinubu back to Lagos” without offering any credible alternative for national development.

The PUNCH roports that a former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, recently joined the SDP, after dumping the ruling APC.

El-Rufai, who is aggrived with President Tinubu, has vowed to mobilise against Tinubu’s re-election in 2027 and he is in talks with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who is Tinubu’s political arch-rival.

However, the factional SDP leader distanced himself from the anti-Tinubu movement, alleging that those behind the coalition do not a better alternative for the country.

Mohammed stated, “The SDP is not for sale or lease to any group, and we will not be part of any anti-government coalition that lacks a defined, progressive agenda for Nigeria’s transformation.”

The faction emphasised its commitment to constructive engagement with the Tinubu-led administration while upholding its democratic obligation to hold the government accountable.

However, it firmly rejected participation in any political movement aimed at destabilising the government or undermining the electoral mandate of Nigerians.

Reaffirming its independence, the Adesina-led National Executive Committee called on SDP leaders nationwide to resist attempts to hijack the party’s leadership.

It urged members to report such acts to relevant authorities and remain calm as the faction continues its effort to reclaim full recognition from the Independent National Electoral Commission.

“We call on SDP leaders at all levels to resist any attempt to usurp their leadership and to remain vigilant. Our doors remain open to genuinely committed new members,” Mohammed added.

The faction also condemned what it described as the illegal replacement of constitutionally recognised state executives by the coalition group, in collaboration with a rival SDP faction.

It likened the current power tussle to the 2019 crisis, when former PDP stalwarts, led by Prof. Jerry Gana, attempted to seize control of the party—an episode that led to the resignation of then National Chairman Chief Olu Falae and protracted legal battles.

This development follows recent reports that former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, a prominent defector from the All Progressives Congress, has joined the SDP and declared his intention to mobilise a coalition to challenge President Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
