Scott Clifton on Liam's Inoperable Brain Tumor on 'Bold and the Beautiful': "The Clock's Ticking" - NewsBreak
Things have gone from bad to worse for The Bold and the Beautiful’s Liam Spencer. After falling unconscious, he believed he had a simple concussion. However, as the story developed, Liam learned the devastating news that he had an inoperable brain tumor. Now his portrayer addresses Liam’s future as his character prepares for potentially the end of his life.
On-screen, Liam’s latest story kicked off at the start of last month, when Clifton’s character Liam told his father, Bill Spencer Jr. ( ), that he was quitting his job at Spencer Publications. After this heated confrontation, Liam appeared to be lightheaded and proceeded to pass out hitting his head on the way down. Steffy ( ) found Liam and rushed him to the hospital where he had emergency surgery due to a brain bleed.
Weeks later, Liam was determined to be there for his daughter’s father-daughter dance. Thus, against medical advice he left the hospital. Shortly after, Liam’s test results arrived, and his doctor Finn (Tanner Novlan) realized the reason for Liam’s pain and suffering was due to an inoperable mass located on his brain. Finn located Liam at Steffy’s and shared with her Liam’s prognosis. Steffy told Finn that she wanted to be the one to break the news. On April 21, 2025, she shared the heartbreaking news with her ex-husband. Now Liam is struggling with this revelation and must now figure out how to proceed.
Speaking to Soap Opera Digest in a recent interview, Clifton reflectedon Liam’s reaction to his diagnosis, “When Liam really does sort of absorb this, and he recognizes that he doesn’t have much time left, it really becomes about setting up the people in his life for success and happiness once he’s gone. That obviously includes his daughters most of all, but it also includes making sure that Steffy and Finn are happy together and that they’re going to be okay, and making sure that Hope is not going to be left alone and spiraling, and that she won’t self-destruct.”
He added, “He doesn’t want anyone to find out that he has this inoperable brain tumor because he has this sort of ‘clock’s ticking’ mentality. It just feels like such a waste of time to him to have conversations with people where they’re just feeling bad for him, or having to navigate other people’s feelings about losing him. It’s a really interesting kind of mindset for him to be in — he really doesn’t want anyone to know, but at the same time, he’s trying to work behind the scenes to set everybody up.”
Previously , Clifton didn’t shy away from the elephant in the room. When asked if this was going to lead to an exit on the show, the actor shared, “They have this adage in acting classes where they say, ‘Don’t play the end of the scene,’ and I think there’s something to that in real life. I’m kind of trying to cross each bridge as I come to it and not think too hard about it. To the fans, I would say, ‘Hey, man, we’re on this trip together! I’m right there with you. I don’t know exactly where this is going. I’m only like a couple weeks ahead!’ I also want the fans to know that whatever happens, this story is being told with such thoughtfulness and delicacy and generosity and love, from the top down. We all really, really care.”
Clifton assumed the role of young adult heartthrob Liam Spencer (then Cooper) in 2010 on the Los Angeles-based daytime drama. Clifton quickly became a fan favorite with his front-burner romantic triangle between stepsisters Steffy Forrester ( ) and Hope Logan (originally , now ). Clifton found himself within the top 5 appearances on the soap opera from 2011-2021, often ranking second in episode appearances (peaking in 2012, appearing in over 200 episodes).
Clifton’s soap credits also include General Hospital and One Life to Live .
Fans will have to continue to watch to find out if this truly is the end of Clifton’s time on The Bold and the Beautiful , or just the beginning of his next storyline.
The Bold and the Beautiful airs weekdays at 12:30 p.m. ET on CBS and streams daily on Paramount+.
