Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Monday received the National Sports Festival Torch of Unity at the State House, Ikeja.
Sanwo-Olu who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, said the tradition of the torch carrying and lighting ceremony has become a cherished symbol of peace and togetherness.
He pledged support for the sports fiesta in Ogun State, between May 16 and 30.
The governor said “Beyond competition, it serves as a vital platform for talent discovery and youth empowerment. This biennial multi-sport event, coordinated by the National Sports Commission, is Nigeria’s version of the Olympics, showcasing our best athletes and preparing them for international excellence.
“As the final port of call before the torch proceeds to Ogun State-the proud host of the 22nd National Sports Festival, tagged “The Gateway Games Ogun 2025”, Lagos State is honored to receive this powerful symbol of unity and excellence.
“We are proud to support this noble cause. This biennial multi-sport event discovers and nurtures our best athletic talents while fostering national unity, sportsmanship, and healthy competition across the Country.”
Sanwo-Olu, therefore, called on all Lagos residents to rally behind the noble cause, celebrate the spirit of sportsmanship, and demonstrate through hospitality and enthusiasm that sports remain a powerful vehicle for national integration and development.
“As the Festival Torch of Unity leaves Lagos for Ogun, may it ignite in all of us a renewed passion for unity, fair play, and excellence. Let us remember that the strength of Nigeria lies in our diversity and our ability to come together as one nation through the universal language of sports,” he said.
