Sanwo-Olu reaffirms commitment to consumer rights protection

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to protecting consumer rights and driving sustainable development in the state.

Speaking on Tuesday at the 2025 World Consumer Rights Day celebration, organised by the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency at Marriott Hotel, GRA, Ikeja, the governor emphasised the importance of ensuring fairness, transparency, and accountability in business practices.

The annual event, which highlights the significance of consumer rights in economic development, had the theme “A Just Transition to Sustainable Lifestyles.”

The governor, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, highlighted several government initiatives aimed at promoting sustainability, including circular economy projects, clean energy programmes, and plastic waste reduction strategies.

“In Lagos State, consumer protection remains a cornerstone of our administration’s agenda under the T.H.E.M.E.S Plus framework. We aim to create a 21st-century economy where businesses thrive while upholding the rights of consumers,” the governor stated.

He also pointed to the recently launched Lagos Climate Action Plan, which provides a roadmap for achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, as well as the establishment of the Lagos State Carbon Registry to monitor and reduce carbon footprints across different sectors.

Sanwo-Olu stressed the importance of inclusive sustainability, ensuring that no one is left behind as Lagos moves towards eco-friendly policies.

On her part, the Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trades, and Investment, Folashade Ambrose, emphasised the urgent need for a fair and inclusive transition to sustainable consumption.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Olugbemiga Aina, she said, “The past decade has seen record-high temperatures, increasing pollution, and threats to biodiversity. These environmental challenges are not just ecological concerns; they directly impact economies, businesses, and consumers.

“As we seek solutions, we must ensure that sustainable choices are not only available but also accessible and affordable to all, especially vulnerable and low-income consumers.”
